MDCU was established in 1964 as an umbrella organisation of primary co-operatives in Machakos District. Its main objective was to market coffee for the producers within the District. Other societies were later incorporated. This includes Cotton, Dairy, Horticulture, Handicrafts and Multipurpose projects.MDCU is registered un the Co-operatives Act of Kenya Cap 190 as CS no. 1097.The supreme body of the Union is th Annual General Meeting ( AGM) which comprises of Delegates for the representative societies and groups. The AGM periodically( as stipulated by the law) elects the Management Board which oversees the activities of the Union. Under the board in the General Manager who is the unions CEO. He oversees the day to day activities and has the assistant general manager and the chief accountant under him. Each of the section and departments is headed by the sectional manager. Each sectaional manager has a team of support staff for the running of their sections.
